The Dallas Cowboys enter Week 16 of the NFL season with slim chances of making the playoffs, and many fans have already started focusing on the 2025 NFL Draft.
While the team has several areas in need of improvement, one position and player have emerged as a consensus among the draft community.
Joe Lago of The Big Lead reviews various mock drafts and identifies the consensus pick for each team. For the Cowboys, that player is Boise State running back Ashton Jeanty, who was a Heisman Trophy runner-up.
Despite Rico Dowdle’s recent strong performance as one of the top running backs in the NFL, many draft experts still favor Jeanty for Dallas. Lago suggests that Cowboys owner Jerry Jones might correct the past decision of not signing running back Derrick Henry by selecting Jeanty to relieve pressure on quarterback Dak Prescott.
Jeanty, a Frisco, Texas native, has expressed that being drafted by the Cowboys would make him a “hometown hero” and believes Dallas would be a great fit for his skills.
This season, Jeanty rushed for 2,288 yards and 28 touchdowns, averaging an impressive 7.3 yards per carry.
While Jeanty’s talent is unquestionable, the success of Dowdle in the final stretch of the season adds an interesting layer to the situation. Dowdle, an unrestricted free agent, could price himself out of Dallas if his value increases, especially if the Cowboys are confident Jeanty is the right fit for their backfield.
The 2025 NFL Draft will take place in Green Bay, Wisconsin, with the first round on Thursday, April 24, followed by rounds 2 and 3 on Friday, April 25, and the final rounds on Saturday, April 26.
