The Oregon Ducks have experienced a quite harsh beginning to the new year. They experienced a devastating 41-21 loss to the Ohio State Buckeyes in the Rose Bowl, and shortly after the defeat, one of their recent recruits, quarterback Jaron-Keawe Sagapolutele, decided to enter the transfer portal.
Sagapolutele, a 2025 recruit, committed to the Ducks on December 4. As one of the leading quarterbacks in his class, Oregon was excited to have secured Sagapolutele, particularly with Dillon Gabriel anticipated to enter the 2025 NFL Draft soon.
Nonetheless, that plan has fallen apart after Sagapolutele surprisingly chose to enter the transfer portal less than a month after agreeing with Oregon. Now that he is officially seeking to depart from the Ducks, forecasts suggest he will join a leading ACC team, the California Golden Bears.
“NEW: On3’s Pete Nakos and Steve Wiltfong have made predictions about Cal acquiring Oregon transfer QB Jaron-Keawe Sagapolutele. The 5-star QB entered the Transfer Portal after signing and enrolling at Oregon last month,” On3 announced in a post on X, previously called Twitter.
It’s not unexpected for Cal to be associated with Sagapolutele, as he had pledged to the Golden Bears before joining Oregon. Sagapolutele reversed his decision and joined the Ducks in December, but it appears he may be going back to the place he had recently departed.
Given that Cal has just lost their starting quarterback for 2024, Fernando Mendoza, to the Indiana Hoosiers, they clearly need assistance at that position, so it wouldn’t be surprising if their interest in Sagapolutele is rekindled due to this situation.
There remains a possibility that Sagapolutele might stay with Oregon, but it seems unlikely, and if he does move on, a return to Cal might be on the table.
