Tennessee football’s transfer portal class hasn’t been as impressive as supporters anticipated when the window started last month. The Vols have seen 18 players enter the transfer portal and have signed just two players from it.
Tennessee has added wide receiver Amari Jefferson and offensive lineman Wendell Moe Jr. from the portal, strengthening two important position groups. Nevertheless, the Vols are lacking one crucial aspect with their unimpressive transfer portal class: depth.
Losing 18 players while bringing in just two significantly impacts Tennessee’s depth. The Vols are adding 25 recruits from high school, which will enhance their depth, but this might lead to dependence on inexperienced young players who have minimal collegiate-level playing experience.
VolQuest’s Brent Hubbs verified that Tennessee will continue to recruit from the portal during the winter period. Josh Heupel and his team are aware that a spring window is approaching and plan to recruit additional players for the upcoming summer workouts, though some tasks remain to be completed prior to spring practice.
Tennessee critically requires additional talent at wide receiver, offensive and defensive line, and defensive secondary. Hubbs stated that Tennessee intends to seek players in the portal for all those positions, along with a running back to fill in for Dylan Sampson following a record-setting season.
Hubbs mentioned he anticipates Tennessee will continue to engage in the transfer portal, as USC transfer offensive lineman Emmanuel Pregnon is visiting this week. Acquiring Pregnon would significantly bolster Tennessee’s offensive line, which is facing substantial losses this year and requires prompt rebuilding if the team aims to remain competitive in 2025.
Pregnon would be an excellent addition, and five-star offensive tackle David Sanders Jr. is set to join Tennessee’s offensive line next season as well. Pregnon is the third-best transfer option and a four-star athlete in the portal.
Heupel will need to utilize the portal and shake things up with the current players to bring in essential depth to the roster if the Vols aim to reach the College Football Playoff once more in 2025 and pursue a deeper playoff journey.
