Indiana’s men’s basketball coach Mike Woodson faced unpopularity on Tuesday following his team’s defeat against Illinois.
The Illini humiliated the Hoosiers with a 94-69 rout before their home fans at Simon Skjodt Assembly Hall in Bloomington, Ind. Illinois achieved an impressive 60 points in the first half, leading by 28 points at halftime.
As Indiana’s deficit increased more and more, the cheers from the home fans also intensified. The structure reverberated with a 2-word slogan demanding Woodson’s removal.
“Fire Woodson!” “Fire Woodson!” the crowd shouted.
Indiana approached the match with a commendable 13-4 record. However, the team appeared entirely outclassed by No. 19 Illinois, which was the Hoosiers’ first ranked rival this season.
Woodson is serving as Indiana’s head coach for his fourth year. He took the Hoosiers to the NCAA Tournament during his inaugural season and then followed that up with a second-round showing in Year 2.
Last season, Indiana did not meet expectations and was unable to participate in March Madness following a 19-14 record. At that time, there were concerns about Woodson’s job stability, but the team ultimately chose to retain him.
