Injuries have been a major narrative for the Detroit Lions during the 2024 season.
They have been without Aidan Hutchinson for a large part of the season and have seen a steady stream of players joining him on the injured list all year.
For a moment, it appeared that the Lions’ injury fortune could be shifting this week with the confirmation that David Montgomery would be back for the Divisional Round game against the Washington Commanders.
Regrettably, the Lions have once more received unfortunate injury updates.
In the injury report dated January 16, the team announced that right guard Kevin Zeitler would be unavailable for the game against the Commanders.
The Lions added Zeitler with a one-year contract during the last offseason to take Jonah Jackson’s spot on their line after he departed for the Rams.
Zeitler received his initial Pro Bowl selection as a player for the Baltimore Ravens in 2023.
It’s a decision that has benefited them over the course of the year.
Zeitler played in 16 regular season games for the Lions and contributed to them maintaining one of the toughest offensive lines in football once more.
In his absence, the Lions will rely on Christian Mahogany. The Lions selected Mahogany in the sixth round of the latest NFL Draft.
He has participated in only 75 career snaps, with merely eight of them occurring at right guard.
The Lions will rely on a solid showing from the rookie in his second career start in a game that might necessitate their offense to score frequently to secure a victory.
