The New York Yankees relinquished Juan Soto to the New York Mets and have arguably become the most aggressive team in baseball since then.
New York has acquired several major players such as Devin Williams, Max Fried, Cody Bellinger, and Paul Goldschmidt, and there’s more to come. There remains ample time before Spring Training, and the Yankees have been associated with several interesting choices to strengthen the infield.
Joel Reuter from Bleacher Report compiled a list of one “realistic” target for every team to address their “most significant roster gap,” recommending Colorado Rockies Gold Glove Award recipient Brendan Rodgers for New York.
“New York Yankees: second baseman Brendan Rodgers,” Reuter stated. “Major Gap: Second Base/Third Base.” The Yankees have been associated with Rodgers while finalizing their infield. Jazz Chisholm Jr.’s capability to play both second and third base provides them with options in their targets, and Rodgers would be contending with Oswaldo Cabrera, Oswald Peraza, and DJ LeMahieu for a starting position. The 28-year-old won the NL Gold Glove at second base in 2022.
Rodgers may not be a household name, but in 2024 he posted a line of .267/.314/.407, contributing 13 home runs, 29 doubles, and 54 RBIs. He’s expected to secure a five-year, $56 million contract this offseason. Rodgers could readily assist the Yankees in the middle infield. Could they secure an agreement in free agency?
