For some reason, sports analysts appear to struggle greatly with articulating three specific words in sequence.
“I was mistaken” is expressed at times, but hardly as frequently as it should be.
One college football commentator who ultimately acknowledged this was ESPN’s Paul Finebaum, who did so last week while talking about Notre Dame on The Paul Finebaum Show.
For years, Finebaum has openly criticized Notre Dame for various reasons and emphasized the necessity for it to join a conference. This week, the longtime spokesperson for the SEC finally acknowledged his error and conceded that 2024 showed he was mistaken about Notre Dame football.
“Cette année, Notre Dame nous a tous contredits,” a déclaré Finebaum. “They demonstrated that they can thrive without a conference.” I didn’t believe they were able to. I give a lot of credit to Marcus Freeman and his team for how they excelled this college football season.
Notre Dame indeed reached the National Championship game last season but ultimately lost to Ohio State.
As the College Football Playoff expands in the future, Notre Dame’s route to it becomes less challenging, despite the assured positions allocated to the Big Ten, SEC, ACC, and Big 12.
All that Notre Dame needs to do to qualify for the playoff when it expands again is to basically end up in the nation’s top 14. Maybe Finebaum is altering his stance not only due to Notre Dame’s performance last season but also because of what it is poised to achieve in the upcoming years under Marcus Freeman.
