Last week, Bowling Green’s head coach Scot Loeffler took the quarterback coach role with the Philadelphia Eagles, creating an unusual head coach vacancy in FBS for March. As reported by Zach Barnett of footballscoop.com, Gophers co-defensive coordinator and cornerbacks coach Nick Monroe is “one of the candidates” for the open position.
On February 28, the school formally declared that Loefler was departing from the program to take a position on Philadelphia’s staff. As spring practice approaches for teams nationwide, Bowling Green’s search comes at a distinctive time; however, as Gophers supporters are aware, the coaching cycle is constant.
Barnett’s report went on, noting that Monroe has already had an interview for the role, but head coach Mike Jacobs from Mercer and associate head coach Vince Marrow from Kentucky are also formidable contenders.
This offseason, Minnesota’s coaching staff has experienced significant shifts, as defensive coordinator Corey Hetherman moves to Miami (FL), defensive line coach Winston DeLattiboudere III heads to the Arizona Cardinals, and running backs coach Nick McKissic-Luke takes the same role with the New York Jets.
Monroe served as the defensive backs coach at Bowling Green from 2010 to 2015, establishing some familiarity. He has been part of the Gophers since 2023, serving as the co-defensive coordinator and coaching the cornerbacks. As Danny Collins prepares for his inaugural season directing Minnesota’s defense, Monroe’s expertise would aid the coaching staff’s transition in 2025.
Given the distinct timing, Bowling Green will probably move quickly with the hiring process, making it a scenario to watch closely.
