Burnes Struggles Again as D-backs Drop Series Finale to Nationals
WASHINGTON (KYMA, KECY) – A late rally came up short for the Diamondbacks, as an early hole proved too deep to escape in a 5-4 loss to the Nationals on Sunday afternoon.
Arizona allowed runs in each of the first three innings, setting the tone for a tough day. Despite trimming the deficit with runs in the fourth, sixth, and seventh innings, the D-backs couldn’t find the clutch hit in the final two frames, capping off a 2-4 road trip.
Gabriel Moreno paced the offense with two hits and an RBI. Ketel Marte and Alek Thomas also contributed RBIs, and Arizona had the tying run at the plate in the ninth, but Lourdes Gurriel Jr. struck out looking to end the game.
Corbin Burnes, making his second start with Arizona, gave up four runs over five innings and battled control issues. The bullpen was solid, allowing just one run across the final four innings to keep the game within reach.
“We had a chance late,” Burnes said. “I need to do a better job of putting us in a position to win from the start.”
The Diamondbacks now return home for their Chase Field opener Monday night against the Yankees.
