Colin Granger may have no football background, but the Carolina Panthers are betting on his potential to transition into an NFL tight end.
The team officially signed the 6-foot-9, 235-pound former Division I basketball player on Monday, taking a leap similar to the one the San Diego Chargers made back in 2003 when they added Antonio Gates—another college basketball standout who hadn’t played football at the collegiate level.
Granger, a Georgia native, began his basketball career at Ohio University in 2020 and went on to play at Western Carolina in the 2022-23 season before finishing his collegiate run at Central Carolina over the past two years.
The Panthers are clearly hoping to strike gold as the Chargers once did with Gates, who went on to have a Hall of Fame career and is set to be inducted in Canton, Ohio, this summer after 16 seasons—all with the Chargers.
