Things have been quiet for Michigan State basketball regarding the transfer portal. While Xavier Booker, Gehrig Normand, and Tre Holloman have entered the portal, only Booker has committed to UCLA. Normand and Holloman are still seeking new teams.
With three seniors graduating, the potential departure of three current players, and only two incoming freshmen, Michigan State could have several open roster spots. The status of Jase Richardson remains uncertain. As many as seven players could leave this offseason. If this happens, the returning players would be Jeremy Fears Jr., Coen Carr, Jaxon Kohler, Carson Cooper, Kur Teng, and Jesse McCulloch, joined by incoming freshmen Jordan Scott and Cam Ward.
With only eight players currently accounted for, Michigan State has room to add 3-4 more players to reach the 9-10 man rotation they utilized last season, suggesting a strong focus on the transfer portal. Reports indicate that Michigan State has already contacted a guard transferring from LSU, and another potential target is emerging: a mid-major player available for one year who isn’t looking to be the primary star, making him a potentially ideal fit for the team.

Montana transfer Malik Moore looks like a great fit for Michigan State’s style of play. At 6-foot-5 and 190 pounds, he brings more length than Holloman, who stood at 6-foot-2 and 185. While Moore could stand to be a bit more assertive on defense—he averaged just 0.8 steals per game last season—his shooting ability could help Spartan fans move on from recent departures.
Last season, Moore shot 41% from beyond the arc for a Montana squad that reached the NCAA Tournament, where they fell to Wisconsin in the first round. In that game, he posted seven points and three rebounds, shooting 43% from the field.
Although he had a slow start to the season—going 2-for-13 from the field and 1-for-8 from three over his first two games—Moore only missed double-digit scoring five times in the regular season. He shined in the Big Sky Championship, dropping 15 points to power Montana past Northern Colorado and into the tournament.
With one year of eligibility remaining and a career 39% mark from three, Moore would be a welcome addition.
