Head coach Shane Beamer and the South Carolina Gamecocks are now down to five commitments in their 2026 recruiting class after a four-star prospect announced his decommitment on Tuesday. The news comes at a crucial point for Beamer and his staff as they look to build momentum on the recruiting trail following a program-reviving season.
South Carolina is fresh off its first nine-win campaign since 2017 — also the best season yet under Beamer, who enters his fifth year leading the program. But competing with college football’s elite in recruiting is never easy, and the Gamecocks have taken a hit with the sudden departure of highly touted cornerback Peyton Dyer.
Dyer, a 6-foot, 190-pound standout from Duluth High School in Georgia, is ranked as the No. 27 cornerback in the nation and the No. 39 player in his state, according to the 247Sports Composite.
Dyer had been committed to South Carolina since November but withdrew his commitment on Tuesday, according to On3. His decision came shortly after taking an unofficial visit to the USC Trojans over the weekend.

Dyer has official visits lined up this summer to USC on June 6 and Georgia on June 13. He also has a visit to South Carolina scheduled for June 20, giving the Gamecocks a chance to re-engage and possibly regain momentum in his recruitment. As it stands, South Carolina holds five commitments in the 2026 class, led by four-star safety J’Zavien Currence from South Pointe High School. Currence is ranked as the No. 5 safety in the nation. The Gamecocks will host their annual spring game on April 18, a key event for recruiting that could bring more positive news for Shane Beamer and his staff as the spring wraps up.
