Greg Gard and the Wisconsin Badgers have a new potential addition from the transfer portal

Greg Gard has been active in the college basketball transfer portal, having already secured what amounts to three starters for Wisconsin’s roster next season. Still, he continues searching for players who can strengthen the Badgers across the board. Gard is known for targeting athletes who fit his system, making each new name that pops up particularly interesting.

The latest to catch his attention is JaKobe Coles, a transfer from Grand Canyon University who recently entered the portal.

JaKobe Coles Draws Interest from Wisconsin After Entering Transfer Portal

After entering his name into the transfer portal as a graduate transfer, JaKobe Coles has confirmed that he’s been contacted by Wisconsin. The 6-foot-8 forward had a standout season with Grand Canyon University, averaging 14.4 points on 51% shooting, along with 5.7 rebounds and 2.1 assists per game. Known primarily for his inside scoring, Coles also showed he can stretch the floor, attempting 92 three-pointers last season and knocking down shots from deep when needed.

Coles began his college career at Butler, but a knee injury early in the season led to surgery and a medical redshirt. He then transferred to TCU, where he spent three years before making the move to GCU. It was with the Antelopes that Coles truly showcased his all-around offensive game, particularly his ability to score in the paint and at the free-throw line.

Now seeking a medical exemption for a final season of eligibility, Coles has become a hot name in the portal. Whether Wisconsin’s interest turns into a full recruiting push remains to be seen, but he could help fill the void left by Xavier Amos’ departure. The Badgers, however, will face stiff competition—Coles has also drawn interest from Arizona State, West Virginia, Oregon, Cal, Iowa, Xavier, and Creighton.
