Over the past two seasons, Notre Dame invested significantly to acquire one-and-done transfer quarterbacks.

Initially, in 2023, that athlete was Sam Hartman. In that year, 2024, the individual was Riley Leonard. No matter what was mentioned before the spring and fall training sessions regarding the QB rivalry, it was clear that these two would be the starters.

These athletes wouldn’t commit to Notre Dame for substantial cash in their final year of eligibility to sit out.

The year 2025 will look vastly different. The Irish chose not to pursue a portal QB and will look within their own team to decide who the next starting quarterback will be. With Steve Angeli, Kenny Minchey, and CJ Carr, there are numerous alternatives available to select from. The question then arises as to what the process of selecting a starting QB will entail?

Marcus Freeman will tackle this issue when spring practice starts.

Does he kick off the Spring practice period by stating at his first press conference that the QB position is a genuine and open contest? Or does he state that, due to his greater experience, Steve Angeli will start practice with the advantage as the default starting QB?

This choice might not appear significant, yet it has the potential to be. The distinction between Angeli receiving nearly all the snaps with the first unit instead of a more equitable distribution of these opportunities among all three players will significantly impact how each player performs and is viewed.

Freeman should also take into account that a player who feels they aren’t getting a fair chance at the position might choose to enter the spring portal and depart from South Bend.

Freeman’s choice on how to approach this scenario at the start of spring is a significant decision, and Marcus needs to make the correct one with Miami poised to challenge the Irish at the season’s start.
