Jeremiah Smith, a wide receiver for the Ohio State Buckeyes, certainly lived up to expectations in his freshman season. In reality, he truly outperformed expectations, recording 76 catches for 1,315 yards and 15 touchdowns.
Many regarded Smith as the finest receiver prospect to have ever entered Ohio State, and some even termed him the greatest wide receiver prospect of all time.
The 19-year-old must wait another two years to enter the NFL Draft, although he clearly seems prepared to play at the professional level right now.
Nonetheless, those are the guidelines, and Buckeyes icon Maurice Clarett has urged Smith to adhere to them. In particular, he encouraged Smith to approach things in a markedly different way than he had.
“I wouldn’t recommend that he attempt to confront (the NFL), push back, or engage in any actions I took,” Clarett told Dennis Dodd of CBS Sports. “You will have the opportunity to earn money there.” “Simply embrace everything, dude.”
Keep in mind: Clarett attempted to transition to the NFL after only one year in Columbus, but he did not achieve success. This led to Clarett’s football career going downhill, and he would not play again at Ohio State or in the professional arena.
Would NFL teams select Smith at this moment? Certainly. One could present a valid argument that he could be the first wide receiver chosen No. 1 overall since Keyshawn Johnson in 1996.
Nevertheless, it’s a risk that the superstar should avoid.
