Following his team’s home defeat to Louisville on Sunday, Notre Dame coach Micah Shrewsberry gave a memorable tirade in a press conference.
It seems that Shrewsberry was annoyed by the home crowd’s lack of enthusiasm during the 75-60 loss to the Cardinals. The second-year Notre Dame coach was upset that Louisville supporters outnumbered the home crowd and implied that those who weren’t coming to cheer on the team now wouldn’t be invited back when things improved.
Shrewsberry even knocked over the microphone angrily to punctuate his point.
I observed that there were more Louisville supporters present than Notre Dame supporters. Shrewsberry remarked, “And that’s embarrassing.” “As the head coach here, I find that embarrassing. Yes, I put us in this situation. But, man, we’re turning this around, so don’t return when we’re winning. You had better believe that.
“Believe me, everyone who gave up on me. Put this date on paper and have faith in it. Because we are going to start this process. I don’t give a damn if you gave up.
This is a rather dangerous move on Shrewsberry’s part. He is on the verge of berating the supporters of his own school for their lack of support, which is never acceptable.
The Fighting Irish are now 5-9 in ACC play and 11-14 overall after Sunday’s defeat. Following a 13–20 campaign the previous year, some supporters may be growing impatient with Shrewsberry, and it appears that they feel the same way.
When compared with Louisville, the problems are especially obvious. Following Sunday’s victory, they are now 20-6 and tied for second in the ACC under new head coach Pat Kelsey, after finishing 8-24 the previous season. It doesn’t appear that Shrewsberry will produce anything approaching that kind of change.
Since taking over at Notre Dame, Shrewsberry has publicly criticized others on multiple occasions. In the end, it appears that the vehement remarks are having little effect.
