Huskies player Paige Bueckers keeps ascending UConn’s historic scoring leaderboard.
As Wednesday’s away game against Seton Hall approached, Bueckers required 14 points to rank ninth in the program’s scoring history, surpassing Phoenix Mercury guard Diana Taurasi (2,156). Bueckers surpassed Taurasi’s record when she made a pull-up jumper at the start of the third quarter.
Bueckers scored 23 points on 8-of-13 shooting in 27 minutes, guiding the Huskies to a 91-49 win. This marks the 13th occasion she has reached 20 points or higher this season.
The No. 5 Huskies currently stand at 25-3 and have three regular-season matches left before the Big East Tournament, set for March 7-10 in Uncasville, Connecticut.
In January, Bueckers set the record for the quickest player in program history to achieve 2,000 points (102 games), surpassing Maya Moore’s previous record (108 games). Moore, naturally, is the program’s top scorer of all time (3,036 points).
Although Bueckers is an exceptional scorer, she likely won’t have the opportunity to surpass Moore’s record, as she is anticipated to join the 2025 WNBA Draft. In Tankathon’s most recent mock draft, the Dallas Wings select her as the No. 1 choice.
Ex-UConn greats, such as Taurasi and Moore, have enjoyed outstanding careers in the WNBA.
Moore captured four titles in eight years with the Minnesota Lynx, whereas Taurasi has secured three in 20 years with the Mercury. Taurasi is the top scorer in league history with 10,646 points.
Given the program’s remarkable history, it would not be surprising if Bueckers emerges as one of the league’s top players when she turns professional.
