On Monday afternoon, President Trump and a few Buffalo Bills players played golf at his Trump International Golf Club in Palm Beach, Florida.
Spencer Brown, Sam Martin, Ryan Van Demark, Dalton Kincaid, and Tommy Doyle, who recently retired, were among the players.
Trump was able to hang out and chat with the players of the franchise he once sought to purchase more than a decade ago.
When former Bills owner Ralph Wilson passed away in March 2014, the franchise was put up for sale.
Trump was among the interested buyers, but he never came across as overconfident during the bidding process. In 2014, Trump told Fox News, “I’ll be bidding, but many other people will be bidding,” adding, “I would say the chances are very, very unlikely, because I’m not going to do something totally stupid.” Trump was correct in determining that he was “perhaps just a little bit stupid, but not totally stupid,” given that his attempt to acquire an NFL team ultimately failed.
Trump’s quest to own an NFL team came to an end when the NFL owners unanimously approved Terry and Kim Pegula’s purchase of the team at a then-record $1.4 billion. Shortly after, he relocated his time, money, and energy to the campaign trail, and now he sits in the Oval Office inside the White House instead of the owner’s suite at Highmark Stadium. This is a real sliding doors moment of what might have happened if Trump’s attempt to purchase the Bills had succeeded.
We will never know if he would have continued to pursue politics or if he would have ever served as America’s Commander in Chief, but we do know that he has no ill will toward the NFL or the Bills, as evidenced by the picture of them all hanging out at his course. Josh Allen and the Pegulas have also been mentioned by Trump in the past.
Trump stated, “The owner who got it is a very good man,” during an interview on the podcast Bussin’ on the Boys.
“He did a fantastic job, in my opinion. Josh [Allen] is a fantastic quarterback, so he made a wise choice.
When Trump went to Super Bowl LIX earlier this month, he also became the first sitting president to attend a Super Bowl.
