The Irish have only three regular season matches left before the ACC Tournament wraps up the season. Are these final few games the last we will witness of Markus Burton in a Notre Dame uniform?
This is entirely conjectural, but arises from my thoughts as a longtime supporter of Notre Dame basketball.
Is it guaranteed that Markus Burton will return to Notre Dame next season?
Burton is wrapping up his sophomore season, during which his scoring has increased by more than three points per game compared to the 17.5 he averaged when he earned last year’s ACC Rookie of the Year award.
He’s undoubtedly a star, and anyone who follows Notre Dame basketball is aware of that, but despite him being a local talent (Mishawaka/Penn High School), how aggressive will the vultures be regarding the transfer portal?
Following St. John’s recent win against UConn, legendary head coach Rick Pitino, who has already made significant use of the transfer portal, was questioned about how he plans to replace his standout senior guards next season.
“You can’t substitute them with high school students […] We are not bringing in any high school basketball players, not this year.”
Certainly, I pay much more attention to Notre Dame basketball than any other college team, so it’s only natural that Markus Burton would spring to mind when hearing that from one of the greatest college basketball coaches.
