With free agency nearly complete, the Houston Texans’ draft strategy is becoming clearer. Holding the No. 25 pick in the 2025 NFL Draft, Houston has a prime opportunity to add key pieces around quarterback C.J. Stroud in a talent-rich offensive class.
Many analysts, including those from NFL.com and ESPN, project the Texans to target an offensive tackle with their first pick—an unsurprising move given the struggles of their offensive line in 2024. However, beyond the obvious needs at tackle and wide receiver, Houston could also look to bolster its defensive front early in the draft. Here’s a look at three potential first-round targets for the Texans.
Texas WR Matthew Golden
After failing to secure a top-tier wide receiver in free agency, the Texans are strong candidates to take one in the first round. Golden was highly productive at Texas, racking up 987 yards and nine touchdowns in 2024, bringing his three-year total to 1,975 yards and 22 touchdowns. His blazing 4.29-second 40-yard dash at the combine highlights his game-changing speed—something Houston needs with Tank Dell sidelined. Adding Golden would give Stroud another dynamic weapon in the passing game.
Michigan DT Kenneth Grant
One of Houston’s biggest defensive weaknesses is the interior defensive line. Strengthening the front would help take pressure off edge rushers Danielle Hunter and Will Anderson Jr. Grant put together a strong 2024 season at Michigan, recording three sacks, seven tackles for loss, and 32 total tackles in 12 games. Given the Texans’ willingness to move around the draft board under this regime, trading up for Grant could be an option if he’s available in the middle of the first round.
Ohio State OT Josh Simmons
Houston is in the midst of revamping its offensive line, parting ways with Kenyon Green, Kendrick Green, and Laremy Tunsil while adding Cam Robinson, Laken Tomlinson, Ed Ingram, and Trent Brown. Robinson, the only guaranteed starter among the new additions, is on a one-year deal.
Simmons would be an ideal long-term solution at tackle. He didn’t allow a single sack or quarterback hit in 2024, according to PFF, making him a rock-solid option to protect Stroud. If Simmons falls to No. 25, this could be a home-run pick for Houston.
