The Duke Blue Devils have been widely considered the frontrunners for the national championship under head coach Jon Scheyer’s leadership.
Entering the NCAA Tournament as the No. 1 seed in the East region, Duke secured its spot after claiming both the ACC regular-season and tournament titles.
Amid the Blue Devils’ impressive run, the ACC shared exciting news regarding Scheyer.
The Duke head coach has been named a finalist for the prestigious Naismith Trophy, awarded annually to the nation’s top college basketball coach.
Following the announcement, the ACC celebrated Scheyer’s recognition with a social media post.
“Best of the best,” the ACC’s official account shared. “ACC Championship Head Coach, Jon Scheyer, is a Naismith Trophy Coach of the Year finalist!”
The Blue Devils opened their NCAA Tournament run with a dominant 93-49 victory over Mount St. Mary’s, followed by an impressive 89-66 win against Baylor.
Duke’s success has been fueled by former No. 1 overall recruit and Player of the Year finalist Cooper Flagg. The standout freshman has been a force this season, averaging 18.7 points, 7.5 rebounds, 4.2 assists, 1.4 steals, and 1.3 blocks per game.
Scheyer assumed leadership of the Blue Devils’ program following the retirement of Mike Krzyzewski, widely regarded as one of the greatest coaches in college basketball history.
He has served as Duke’s head coach since 2022, having previously worked as the associate head coach from 2018 to 2022 and an assistant coach from 2014 to 2018.
