Landing top quarterbacks in consecutive recruiting cycles is nearly impossible in today’s competitive landscape. With Alabama securing 5-star QB Keelon Russell, the No. 2 overall player in the country, in the last cycle, bringing in another top-tier signal-caller for the 2026 class was always going to be a challenge.
As a result, Kalen DeBoer, Ryan Grubb, and their staff have expanded their search beyond the usual high-profile names. While they remain in the mix for elite quarterbacks, they recognize the difficulty of landing another top prospect with Russell projected as the likely starter for 2026 and 2027.
One of Alabama’s key targets at quarterback is 4-star Derek Zammit from DePaul Catholic in Wayne, New Jersey. On Wednesday, Zammit narrowed his choices to four schools, with the Crimson Tide making the cut.

The other three schools in Zammit’s final four—Mississippi State, Syracuse, and Washington—can offer him a clearer path to early playing time. His decision will likely hinge on whether he values immediate opportunity or long-term development and pedigree. There’s no denying the significant gap between Alabama and the other programs in terms of prestige and track record.
Even if Alabama secures a commitment from Zammit, it may not halt their pursuit of additional quarterbacks in this class. With only three scholarship QBs currently on the roster—and the likelihood that not all will return next season—depth at the position remains a concern.
Zammit is set to visit Alabama on April 12th for A-Day weekend.
Other Quarterbacks Alabama is Targeting
The Crimson Tide is still working to flip Tennessee commit Faizon Brandon, the No. 2 quarterback in the country according to the 247Sports Composite rankings.
They’re also in the mix for 5-star Houston commit Keisean Henderson.
Flipping either quarterback would be a challenge, as both Tennessee and Houston present a more direct path to early playing time compared to Alabama.
Expect Alabama to push for a commitment from Zammit sooner rather than later, but that won’t stop them from keeping other options open. Ideally, the staff will aim to sign two quarterbacks in this class to address their depth concerns at the position.
