Clemson’s defense is undergoing a transformation ahead of the 2025 season, thanks to two key coaching hires: new defensive coordinator Tom Allen and linebackers coach Ben Boulware. Former Tigers linebacker Barrett Carter, now preparing for the NFL Draft, recently shared his impressions of both coaches after witnessing their impact during spring practice.
Carter, who attended a Clemson practice before Pro Day, immediately noticed the intensity Allen brings to the program. The former Indiana head coach and Penn State defensive coordinator has infused the defense with a contagious energy. “I’ve been talking to the guys since I’ve been in California, and they all love him,” Carter said. “They keep telling me how intense he is and what a great man he is. But seeing it in person, the energy he brings is different—truly different. It’s consistent.”
One of the most striking changes? Allen’s vocal leadership. “He has his own microphone at practice,” Carter noted. “That’s new for me because usually, it’s just Coach Swinney with the mic. But he’s out there yelling, screaming, getting excited when guys make plays. He just has a different type of vibe, and the players really feed off of that.”
Carter pointed to a viral moment from practice as an example of Allen’s influence. When defensive back Avieon Terrell snagged an interception, the entire defense stormed the field in celebration—a sign of the passion and camaraderie Allen has cultivated.
Beyond Allen, Carter had high praise for Boulware, a Clemson legend who was instrumental in the Tigers’ 2016 national championship run. Having worked closely with the team last season, Boulware played a crucial role in mentoring Carter and the younger linebackers. “Having a guy who’s been in my shoes, who’s been a senior leader, a national champion, and helped bring Clemson back to the top—it was invaluable,” Carter said. “Being able to pick his brain was huge for me, and even bigger for the younger guys.”
One of those young players is freshman linebacker Sammy Brown, a highly regarded recruit who now has the chance to develop under Boulware’s guidance. “Guys like Sammy Brown coming in and learning from a legend at this school—it’s special,” Carter said. “With Boulware as the linebackers coach now, those guys are going to be on another level this year. I can’t wait to see it.”
When asked about Boulware’s potential as a coach, Carter didn’t hesitate. “He’s going to be a great coach for years to come,” he said.
