Cam Scott is departing from the South Carolina men’s basketball team and entering the transfer portal, as confirmed by multiple sources to The State. His decision, initially reported by On3 Sports, comes just weeks after expressing his desire to remain with coach Lamont Paris and the Gamecocks.
“I enjoyed every moment, every outcome, and every challenge I faced,” Scott said following South Carolina’s early exit from the SEC Tournament in March. “I just wanted to support my teammates, whether on or off the court. Throughout the season, I felt like I brought energy, even when things weren’t going our way, always trying to lift others up.”
Scott is the latest departure from this year’s Gamecocks roster. Austin Herro, Arden Conyers, Zach Davis, Jamarii Thomas, and Nick Pringle have also entered the transfer portal. Meanwhile, South Carolina will lose three players to graduation—Jacobi Wright and Benjamin Bosmans-Verdonk. Additionally, rising junior forward and All-SEC honoree Collin Murray-Boyles is considering leaving early for the NBA Draft.
The Gamecocks have already secured three players through the transfer portal: Christ Essandoko (Providence), Treysen Eaglestaff (North Dakota), and Meechie Johnson (Ohio State).
Scott averaged 2.3 points and 10 minutes per game but made the most of his opportunities. In South Carolina’s SEC Tournament loss to Arkansas, he delivered his best performance since December, scoring eight points and sinking two three-pointers on a perfect 3-for-3 shooting in the second half.
A four-star recruit from Lexington High School, Scott initially signed with Texas before committing to South Carolina. He concluded his high school career as Lexington’s most decorated boys’ basketball player, leading the Wildcats to their first state championship since 2000. Scott was a two-time S.C. Gatorade Player of the Year, joining the likes of Stanley Roberts, Milton Jennings, and Brice Johnson. He earned all-state honors five times, set a school record with 2,475 career points, and holds Lexington’s records for steals in a season (100) and single-game scoring (43 points).
