North Carolina football notched a major recruiting victory over the SEC on Sunday, landing a four-star prospect who quickly explained why programs like LSU and Tennessee didn’t stack up to the vision Bill Belichick is creating in Chapel Hill.
O’Mari Johnson, a standout from Jackson Academy in Wesson, Mississippi, has become the latest verbal commit for North Carolina. The four-star athlete spoke with Don Callahan of 247Sports about why he chose the Tar Heels over other top programs. The wide receiver and cornerback kept his initial response simple:
“I didn’t see any better possible choice. Why not North Carolina?” Johnson said.
He then expanded on what specifically drew him to Chapel Hill.
“I like the way they focus on developing players and how Coach [Bill] Belichick has brought his NFL system to the college level. Plus, the coaching experience really stood out to me,” Johnson explained.
While he’s capable of playing on both sides of the ball, Johnson is expected to focus on defense at UNC. He said the coaching staff laid out a clear vision for his role within Belichick’s system.
“I got to see more of how they plan to use me and what goes on behind the scenes — like how they install plays. It really came down to their detailed approach and how they’re focused on developing me both as a player and as a person,” he said.
