Did the six players who entered the transfer portal after last season have a better 2024-25 season?
Alabama men’s basketball’s 2023-24 season will be remembered as a historic one, marking the first time in program history that the Crimson Tide made it to the Final Four. Despite this incredible achievement, not every player returned for the following season, with six scholarship players entering the transfer portal.
Now that the 2024-25 season has wrapped up, with Alabama finishing in the Elite Eight of the NCAA Tournament and securing the No. 6 spot in the AP Top 25, here’s a look at how the six transfers performed with their new teams this season.
Davin Cosby
The guard saw limited action with Alabama, averaging just 8 minutes per game and 3.6 points. In his sophomore season at Wake Forest, he improved his scoring to 5.6 points per game while his minutes were doubled to 17, with nine starts.
Future Plans: Transferred to Kennesaw State on April 2, where he will play under former Alabama assistant and current Owls head coach, Antoine Pettway.
Rylan Griffen
Griffen played a key role in Alabama’s historic run, averaging 11.2 points on 45.4% shooting from the field and 39.2% from three in 26.3 minutes per game as a sophomore. However, after transferring to Kansas, his production dipped, with 6.3 points on 37.2% shooting and 33.6% from beyond the arc in 20.2 minutes per game this season.
Future Plans: Entered the transfer portal on March 31.
Kris Parker
After redshirting his freshman year at Alabama, Parker aimed for a breakout season at Villanova. However, in 27 games with the Wildcats, he averaged just 2.6 points in 10 minutes per game.
Future Plans: Entered the transfer portal on April 8.
Nick Pringle
In 34 games (16 starts) at Alabama, Pringle averaged 6.8 points and 5.1 rebounds in 18.4 minutes per game. During his graduate season at South Carolina, his numbers improved, as he averaged 9.5 points and 6.3 rebounds in 24.4 minutes per game, starting in every contest.
Future Plans: Entered the transfer portal on March 24.
Mohamed Wague
Wague had a limited role at Alabama, averaging 8.3 minutes, 3.1 points, and 2.5 rebounds per game as a junior. At Oklahoma, he saw a slight increase in playing time and posted 3.9 points and 3.1 rebounds per game.
Future Plans: Returning to Oklahoma for his graduate season.
Sam Walters
Walters appeared in all 37 games for Alabama in 2023, averaging 5.4 points in 12.3 minutes per game. After transferring to Michigan, his role and production stayed nearly identical, as he logged a similar amount of time on the floor.
Future Plans: Entered the transfer portal on March 31.
While some of these players showed marginal improvements after leaving Alabama, Nick Pringle appears to be the only one who had a noticeably better individual performance and team impact in the 2024-25 season. However, Pringle will not return to South Carolina for another season and will look to find a new program.
Alabama’s incoming freshmen class and a couple of offseason transfer additions played a role in these players’ departures, but it’s interesting to consider how things might have unfolded if a few of them had stayed in Tuscaloosa.
