After a strong start to the season, the San Francisco Giants take on the Yankees in a three-game series in New York.
The San Francisco Giants open a three-game series against the New York Yankees on Friday, with two of their top three starters slated to take the mound over the weekend.
Both clubs are off to strong starts this season. The Giants (9-3) are riding momentum from a dramatic walk-off win over the Cincinnati Reds on Wednesday at Oracle Park, where Mike Yastrzemski launched a 10th-inning home run into McCovey Cove.
The Yankees (7-5) have been one of the most potent offenses in baseball, powered by outfielder Aaron Judge, who’s making an early case for a third American League MVP. Although New York has cooled slightly, it still holds a one-game lead over the Toronto Blue Jays atop the AL East.
Friday’s series opener features Giants left-hander Robbie Ray (2-0, 3.18 ERA), aiming for his third straight win, going up against Yankees right-hander Marcus Stroman (0-0, 7.27 ERA). First pitch is scheduled for 4:05 p.m. PT.
Ray, the 2021 AL Cy Young Award winner, is showing signs of returning to form after undergoing Tommy John surgery in 2023. In his most recent outing, he earned a win against his former team, the Seattle Mariners, tossing six innings while allowing four hits and one run. He issued five walks and recorded two strikeouts.
Stroman, who was once mentioned in spring trade rumors, has remained in the Yankees’ rotation due to injuries to Gerrit Cole, Luis Gil, and Clarke Schmidt. In his latest appearance versus the Pittsburgh Pirates, he lasted just four innings, surrendering three hits, four runs, and three walks while striking out three. He has yet to pitch five innings in either of his first two starts this season.
Saturday’s matchup, scheduled for 12:05 p.m., will see Giants right-hander Jordan Hicks (1-0, 2.38 ERA) face Yankees right-hander Will Warren (0-0, 6.00 ERA).
Hicks will be making his third start of the season after a no-decision against the Mariners, where he went 5.1 innings, giving up six hits, three earned runs, and one walk while striking out five. It was a step back from his strong six-inning, one-hit performance against the Houston Astros on March 31.
Warren, in his second season in the majors, is set to make his eighth career start. He also faced Pittsburgh in his last outing, allowing six hits and four earned runs over four innings. He walked one and struck out five.
Sunday’s series finale, starting at 10:35 a.m., features Giants right-hander Logan Webb (1-0, 1.89 ERA) against Yankees left-hander Carlos Rodón (1-2, 5.19 ERA).
Webb has only one win through three starts but has looked sharp early on. Over 19 innings, he’s allowed just four earned runs and three walks, while striking out 21. He’s gone seven innings in each of his last two starts.
Rodón, meanwhile, has dropped his last two outings. Though he’s allowed just 11 hits in 17.1 innings, he’s given up 10 earned runs and nine walks, while racking up 20 strikeouts. He’s pitched six innings in both losses.
