Cade Tyson Enters Transfer Portal After One Disappointing Season at UNC
When Cade Tyson committed to UNC head coach Hubert Davis and the Tar Heels last year, expectations were high. Regarded as one of the top 3-point shooters in that portal cycle, the former Belmont standout arrived in Chapel Hill with plenty of hype.
However, Tyson’s impact never quite materialized.
After two strong seasons at Belmont, where he was a key starter and logged heavy minutes, Tyson struggled to carve out a significant role with UNC. Despite early hopes, he played a limited 7.9 minutes per game off the bench, averaging just 2.6 points and 1.1 rebounds over 31 appearances. His shooting—expected to be a major asset—fell short of the mark, as he hit just 29.2% from three.
While many fans had wondered if Tyson might return for another season in hopes of a rebound year, On3’s Pete Nakos reported on Friday that the 6-foot-7, 200-pound wing is re-entering the transfer portal after just one year in Chapel Hill.
Tyson’s quiet departure ends a short and underwhelming chapter with the Tar Heels, and he’ll now look to reset his career elsewhere—likely in search of the playing time and rhythm he once had at Belmont.
Cade Tyson garnered significant attention in last year’s transfer cycle thanks to his impressive 46.5% shooting from three during his sophomore season at Belmont. However, after a quiet stint at UNC, his recent struggles could affect his value this time around.
With Tyson’s departure, the Tar Heels now have an additional scholarship to work with. Head coach Hubert Davis and his staff have already secured three additions from the portal: former Colorado State guard Kyan Evans, Arizona big man Henri Veesaar, and West Virginia wing Jonathan Powell—a promising trio that forms the foundation of UNC’s 2025 transfer class.
