The Wisconsin Badgers have had an offseason of change, with several new starters expected to take the field in 2025, particularly in the trenches.
The team is undergoing a rebuild on both sides of the line, though with different approaches. Wisconsin has used the transfer portal to bolster its defensive line and edge positions, aiming to improve both depth and talent. Meanwhile, they are counting on younger players to step up on the offensive line.
Sophomore Kevin Heywood is set to take over as the starting left tackle, filling the spot vacated by longtime starter Jack Nelson. On the right side, however, the guard position remains up for grabs.
Redshirt senior J.P. Benzschawel was initially seen as the favorite for the right guard role due to his experience as a backup, but the Badgers have opened up a three-way competition this spring, with Benzschawel, senior Kerry Kodanko, and redshirt freshman Emerson Mandell all vying for the spot. Recently, with Benzschawel sidelined, Kodanko and Mandell have been rotating at the position.
Offensive line coach A.J. Blazek is pleased with the competition, noting that each player brings unique strengths to the table. “It’s an equal group, and they all bring something different, from experience to physicality,” Blazek said. “You’re going to see seven or eight guys rotating in, and we want to keep them all engaged. That right guard spot is really fun to watch.”
Kodanko, a physical player with strong communication skills, has the trust of his teammates, making him a steady presence on the line. Blazek praised Kodanko’s ability to help others play fast and his leadership. Meanwhile, Mandell, known for his explosive physical traits, is rapidly improving his football IQ and consistency. Blazek highlighted Mandell’s growth, noting his increased confidence and physicality as he gains more experience.
Right tackle Riley Mahlman also weighed in on the competition, pointing out the differences between Kodanko and Mandell. While Kodanko brings experience and stability, Mandell’s potential is undeniable, with Mahlman noting his freakish strength and athleticism.
With fall camp approaching, the Badgers would like to have their starting right guard settled. However, the battle is still ongoing, with the redshirt freshman slowly making his case by combining his impressive physical attributes with a growing understanding of the game.
