UCLA Transfer Zania Socka-Nguemen Commits to Indiana Women’s Basketball
Former UCLA forward Zania Socka-Nguemen announced her commitment to Indiana on Saturday evening, becoming the latest addition to the Hoosiers’ roster for the upcoming season.
A former top-30 national recruit out of Sidwell Friends School in Washington, D.C., Socka-Nguemen was highly sought after in high school and was once on Indiana’s radar before initially choosing the Bruins. The Silver Spring, Maryland native played in 16 games as a freshman last season, averaging 1.5 points and 1.5 rebounds in just over five minutes per contest. Her best performance came on February 26, when she scored a season-high eight points in a win over Wisconsin. UCLA finished the year 34-3 and reached the Final Four before falling to UConn.
Standing at 6-foot-3, Socka-Nguemen has three years of eligibility remaining. She is the third transfer to join Indiana this offseason, alongside Chloe Spreen and Phoenix Stotijn.
Recognized as a 2024 McDonald’s All-American and ranked No. 26 by espnW HoopGurlz, Socka-Nguemen has been praised for her athleticism, versatility, and defensive prowess. Known as “Big Z,” she brings size and mobility to the court, with the ability to play multiple positions, finish around the rim with either hand, and make an impact as a rim protector.
UCLA head coach Cori Close previously highlighted Socka-Nguemen’s character and community focus, noting her commitment to service—she even founded a women’s empowerment initiative in West Africa as a teenager.
“Big Z is an elite rebounder, a tremendous screener, and a strong defender,” Close said at the time of her signing. “What sets her apart is her drive to improve, her selfless nature, and the way she elevates those around her.”
Socka-Nguemen also shined on the 2023 Nike Girls EYBL circuit with Team Durant 17U, where she averaged 14 points and 6.4 rebounds across 16 games, according to Synergy Sports.
Her addition gives Indiana a versatile, high-upside forward who could develop into a key contributor for the program in the seasons ahead.
