The news of Lee Corso’s retirement from ESPN’s “College GameDay” has sparked a wave of tributes, but few have been as emotional as the one shared by Kirk Herbstreit.
The longtime analyst honored his friend and colleague in a touching social media video following Thursday’s announcement that Corso, 89, will make one final headgear pick this August.
“I just want to say I love you,” Herbstreit began. “Thank you for all the wisdom you’ve passed on over the years. Nearly three decades working beside you has been an absolute joy — on camera and off. The laughs, the unforgettable moments, the passion — it’s all meant so much.”
He went on to celebrate Corso’s impact on college football and the iconic role he played on College GameDay. “This is about honoring everything you’ve brought to the show, and to the sport as a whole. You’re a legend — truly one of a kind, both as a person and a broadcaster.”
Herbstreit reflected on their unique bond, adding, “It’s been an incredible experience sitting next to you since 1996, watching you bring joy to fans with your energy, your unpredictability, and your brilliance.”
He concluded with a heartfelt message: “Our friendship means the world to me. I’m grateful for every moment we’ve shared. You’ve more than earned this retirement. I hope we still get to see you around on Saturdays. Take care of yourself. I love you, my friend.”

Corso’s final broadcast is scheduled for August 30, marking Week 1 of the 2025 college football season, ESPN announced. The network also noted that special programming is being planned to honor and celebrate his legendary career.
