Look, I understand the decision-making process isn’t easy for student-athletes. They’re bombarded with information from every direction, and it’s hard to tell what’s genuine and what’s not.
But here’s my frustration: if you’re going to commit to a program, be sure about it. If there’s any doubt, take a step back and wait until you’re fully confident in the decision.
Johnson’s flip is just one instance of a much bigger issue. The transfer portal, as it stands, is a mess—and the NCAA desperately needs to step in with better regulation.
Honestly, what’s the point in getting excited when a player—whether a high school recruit or a transfer—commits to your program? There’s no guarantee they’ll ever even put on the jersey. Take Ryan Browne, for example—he left after one semester without ever playing a snap for the Tar Heels. Johnson’s commitment didn’t even make it through the day.
And this isn’t just a problem at UNC. This is happening everywhere across the country. The system is broken, and it’s time for a serious overhaul.
