Others are still a few key additions away from building strong classes. The offseason has already been chaotic—and it’s only heating up as the portal deadline approaches.
Kansas, meanwhile, is coming off a disappointing season. Once ranked No. 1, the Jayhawks slipped to a No. 7 seed in the NCAA Tournament. The slide was dramatic and unexpected.
Tensions ran high late in the season. Following a tough road loss to BYU, head coach Bill Self even suggested the team needed time apart. “I’m talked out. We need to get away from each other,” he admitted, reflecting on failed attempts at team bonding.
Rumors about Self potentially retiring began to circulate during the turmoil, though nothing was confirmed.
On April 1, Rylan Griffen entered the transfer portal. A highly anticipated transfer from Alabama, Griffen didn’t have the breakout year many expected. Analyst Fran Fraschilla speculated his struggles may have stemmed from how he was utilized.
“I’m seeing where Rylan Griffen was ‘misused’ by KUHoops… Bill Self has ‘misused’ very few players in 22 years,” Fraschilla wrote, while still wishing Griffen well.
Known for his three-point shooting, Griffen is currently visiting Kentucky and seems poised for a return to the SEC.
