What lies ahead for KU alum Kelly Oubre after wrapping up the season

Kelly Oubre Jr. Quietly Outpaces Joel Embiid in Total Scoring Over Past Two Seasons

In a surprising statistical twist, Philadelphia 76ers small forward Kelly Oubre Jr. has quietly outproduced fellow former Kansas Jayhawk and Sixers centerpiece Joel Embiid in total points over the past two NBA seasons.

Oubre, 29, has amassed 1,955 points across 128 games (109 starts) in the 2023-24 and 2024-25 seasons, outperforming Embiid’s 1,805 points in just 58 appearances due to ongoing injury struggles. The seven-time All-Star and 2021 MVP, who has faced persistent health setbacks, was selected third overall in the 2014 NBA Draft, while Oubre was the 15th overall pick in 2015.

At 6-foot-8 and 205 pounds, Oubre has carved out a key role in Philadelphia’s rotation, offering consistency and resilience during a dismal 24-58 campaign. With a player option for the second year of his $8.4 million contract, he’s widely expected to return to a Sixers team in flux—one that may be increasingly reliant on his steady scoring and veteran presence.

Oubre’s overlooked productivity may give Philadelphia something to build on as the franchise looks to rebound from a disappointing season and manage Embiid’s health moving forward.
