UNC Basketball Freshman Drake Powell Declares for 2025 NBA Draft
UNC basketball rookie Drake Powell, who started in more than half of the Tar Heels’ 37 games during the 2025–26 season, announced on Wednesday that he will forgo his remaining college eligibility and declare for the 2025 NBA Draft. Powell wrapped up his freshman campaign averaging 7.4 points and 3.4 rebounds per game.

The 6-foot-6, 195-pound forward from Pittsboro, North Carolina, shared his heartfelt farewell to the program and its fans on social media:
“Thank you for embracing and supporting me through all the highs and lows of this past season. I’ve grown so much, both as a player and as a person. Being born and raised a Tar Heel, getting the chance to wear that jersey, run through the tunnel, and represent the university I love has been a dream come true. It’s a feeling I’ll cherish forever, and one I’ll never take for granted.”
“To my teammates—my brothers—thank you for the incredible memories we’ve created together on this journey. These moments will stay with me for the rest of my life.
“Reaching the highest level of competition has always been my dream. This wasn’t an easy decision, but with the support and guidance of my family and coaches, I’ve decided to declare for the 2025 NBA Draft.”
In the latest mock draft released this week by NBA Draft On SI, Drake Powell is projected to be selected in the second round at No. 46 overall by the Orlando Magic. If that prediction holds true, Powell could be teaming up with fellow Tar Heel alum and former one-and-done standout Cole Anthony, now a seasoned pro in the Magic’s backcourt.
