The South Carolina Gamecocks women’s basketball team has flourished for years under head coach Dawn Staley’s leadership.
Recently, Staley guided South Carolina to another deep postseason run, but the Gamecocks came up just short of a national championship, falling to Geno Auriemma’s UConn Huskies in the title game.
During their NCAA Tournament journey, the Gamecocks secured wins over Tennessee Tech, Indiana, Maryland, Duke, and Texas. After the season concluded, a few players announced their future plans regarding the program.
Among the few who decided to move on was Sakima Walker.
On Saturday, Walker officially announced she would transfer to California as a graduate transfer, sharing the news on social media alongside a motivational message.
“This one’s personal,” Walker wrote.
Last season with the South Carolina Gamecocks, Sakima Walker averaged 1.4 points, 0.7 rebounds, and 0.3 assists per game. Playing limited minutes on a Final Four roster, she wrapped up the season averaging just 5.5 minutes per contest.
Now preparing for her fifth and final year of eligibility, Walker will join the California Golden Bears for the 2025–26 season.
Walker began her college career at Rutgers, spending two seasons with the Scarlet Knights before transferring to South Carolina, where she played two more seasons under Dawn Staley.
Across her collegiate career, the 6-foot-5 center has posted averages of 2.7 points, 1.7 rebounds, and 0.2 assists per game.
