Full Circle Moment: Kansas Coach Bill Self Recruits UTEP Transfer Ahamad Bynum
In a twist of fate, Kansas coach Bill Self finds himself recruiting a familiar name — Ahamad Bynum, a transfer guard from UTEP and the nephew of former KU target Will Bynum. More than two decades ago, Self, in the early stages of his Kansas career, recruited Will, who eventually chose Georgia Tech. Now, Self has a second chance to land a Bynum in Lawrence.
“It was surprising to me, man,” Ahamad Bynum told The Kansas City Star. “I didn’t think they were going to look my way.”
The Jayhawks, who have four open roster spots to fill, are actively seeking key additions, and Bynum has quickly caught the attention of Self and his staff. Bynum said he has already held phone conversations with Self and Kansas assistants and is scheduled for a Zoom meeting early next week.
While Bynum is also drawing interest from other programs, including Seton Hall and Pittsburgh, he expressed enthusiasm about engaging more deeply with the Kansas staff.
With the Jayhawks aiming to reload for another run at the Big 12 title, the connection between the Bynum family and Bill Self could play a pivotal role in bringing the talented guard to KU — completing a story that started more than 20 years ago.
