For the past 64 years, media personnel have reported on countless Penn State football games from the historic press box at Beaver Stadium. However, on Saturday, the press box was officially dismantled as part of the continuous renovations surrounding the stadium, expected to finish in 2027.
On Saturday morning, a crowd of fans and media convened outside Beaver Stadium in the Stadium West parking lot to witness the demolition of the press box, finished by approximately 8 A.M. EST.
Mark Brennan from 247 Sports, a media member reporting on the demolition from the Stadium West parking lot, shared a video on X capturing the moment the press box collapsed.
The Penn State press box, relocated from the former Beaver Field during the construction of Beaver Stadium in 1960, has been considered one of the most antiquated press boxes in college football, with its last expansion occurring in 1980.
A perfect illustration of this occurred in 2018 when the pipes in the press box froze during their regular-season finale versus Maryland, leaving media personnel without functional restrooms during the game.
Consequently, the program invested $4.5 million last offseason to guarantee that the whole stadium was “winterized” for a possible CFP game, which indeed took place this season versus SMU.
Keeping this in mind, several media personnel experienced at the Beaver Stadium press box took to social media to express their enthusiasm about the demolition.
The drawback of these upgrades is that journalists probably won’t have an assigned press box for the 2025 season. 247 Sports anticipates that a new press box will not be in place until the 2026 season.
However, considering the numerous grievances from media personnel who have passed time in the Beaver Stadium press box over the years, it certainly appears that these upgrades will be a significant benefit for media representatives over time.
