In a commanding performance at the Duke’s Mayo Bowl, the Minnesota Golden Gophers secured their eighth consecutive bowl victory with a 24-10 win over Virginia Tech. The Gophers showcased their offensive prowess, outgaining the Hokies 403-223 in total yards, while key players delivered standout performances.
Quarterback Max Brosmer threw for 211 yards and a touchdown, while running back Darius Taylor contributed significantly with 113 rushing yards and a touchdown, along with a touchdown pass. Elijah Spencer was named MVP after catching six passes for 81 yards and two touchdowns, helping to propel Minnesota to victory.
The Gophers took control of the game in the second quarter, scoring 21 unanswered points. Spencer’s versatility was on full display as he caught a 10-yard halfback option pass from Taylor and followed it up with a 12-yard touchdown reception from Brosmer. Taylor capped off the scoring run with a 28-yard rushing touchdown, putting Minnesota ahead decisively.
For Virginia Tech, backup quarterback Collins Schlee managed to find some success, throwing a 67-yard strike to Ayden Greene, who finished with six catches for 115 yards. However, the Hokies struggled to maintain momentum, failing to convert crucial opportunities in the red zone.
Defensively, Minnesota’s unit stepped up when it mattered most. With the Gophers leading 24-10, Virginia Tech had a chance to mount a comeback after intercepting Brosmer, but Minnesota’s Za’Quan Bryan sealed the game with an interception in the end zone.
As head coach P.J. Fleck celebrated yet another bowl victory with his traditional mayo bath, Minnesota improved to 6-0 in bowl games under his leadership. This win not only extends their bowl winning streak but also sets a positive tone for the upcoming season as they look to build on this success.
