After stringing together a few strong seasons, NC State football came crashing back to earth in 2024. The Wolfpack stumbled to a 3-5 record in ACC play and 6-7 overall, capping off a frustrating year with a 26-21 loss to East Carolina in the Military Bowl.
While there were issues galore, namely a plethora of injuries on both sides of the ball, a profusely leaky defense was a glaring problem. The Wolfpack are hoping their newest addition can help on that front.
Former Texas Tech edge rusher Joseph Adedire is transferring to NC State, per Matt Zenitz and Chris Hummer of 247 Sports and CBS Sports. This last-minute acquisition could prove to be highly impactful for a unit that allowed 30.2 points per game last season. Assuming he is healthy, that is.
This transfer seeks a fresh start and new momentum with NC State football
After missing his junior season due to a knee injury, Joseph Adedire is looking to reboot his career with NC State. While it may take some time for him to fully regain his form in high-level competition, head coach Dave Doeren is optimistic that Adedire can recapture—or even exceed—the flashes of potential he showed at Texas Tech. In two seasons with the Red Raiders, Adedire tallied two sacks, eight tackles for loss, and 21 solo tackles, along with a strong presence on special teams. His freshman-year performance earned him honorable mention All-Big 12 honors.
With NC State aiming to bounce back from a disappointing 2024 campaign, Adedire’s versatility could be a timely asset. The Wolfpack are in need of defensive reinforcements, especially with the ACC becoming increasingly competitive—particularly with Bill Belichick now at the helm of rival North Carolina.
To lead the defensive rebuild, NC State brought in veteran coach D.J. Eliot, a seasoned coordinator with stops at Kentucky, Colorado, Kansas, and Temple, and most recently the Eagles’ linebackers coach in 2023. Eliot now inherits a defense in need of playmakers—and Adedire could be one of them.
If the 6-foot-3, 265-pound transfer can quickly adapt to his new environment, he’ll have a real shot at becoming a key contributor for the Wolfpack defense in 2025.
