South Carolina Women’s Basketball: Big Winners in the Transfer Portal
Although the college basketball transfer portal has officially closed and team rosters are starting to settle, the South Carolina Gamecocks women’s basketball team has emerged as one of the offseason’s biggest winners. Head coach Dawn Staley approached the portal with a clear strategy—fill key roster gaps—and executed it with precision, reinforcing the Gamecocks’ status as a national powerhouse.
Ranked No. 3 on ESPN’s list of top transfer portal hauls, South Carolina added elite talent that perfectly complements their returning core.
Replacing a Star
The departure of MiLaysia Fulwiley to LSU was undoubtedly a tough blow for Gamecocks fans, but the team wasted no time regrouping. Enter Ta’Niya Latson, the electric guard from Florida State who led the nation in scoring last season. Regarded as the most prolific guard in the Staley era, Latson brings instant offense and star power to the backcourt.
Protecting the Paint
South Carolina also bolstered its interior presence with the addition of 6-foot-6 center Madina Okot from Mississippi State. After a strong freshman season, Okot brings much-needed rim protection and physicality, helping the Gamecocks maintain their defensive identity.
Eyes on the Prize: 2025–26 Outlook
With Latson and Okot in the fold, South Carolina looks primed for another deep postseason run. The Gamecocks are squarely in the hunt for their third national championship under Dawn Staley and are once again a team no one will want to face in March.
