Auburn’s receiving corps is being hailed as the Tigers’ not-so-secret weapon heading into the 2025 college football season. AL.com’s Peter Rauterkus recently named the wide receiver room as Auburn’s top position group, crediting two key transfers—Eric Singleton Jr. and Horatio Fields—along with Freeze Four standouts Cam Coleman and Malcolm Simmons.
“When combining both collegiate production and natural talent, it’s hard to argue against wide receiver being Auburn’s best and deepest group on the team. With nine scholarship players, the numbers are there, and the top four all have the ability to be the leading receiver in any game,” Rauterkus wrote.
The arrivals of Singleton and Fields bolster what Simmons and Coleman already bring back. True freshman Bryce Turner also made waves in spring camp and is expected to compete for early playing time alongside returning contributors Jyaire Shorter, Omari Kelly, and Koy Moore.
Hugh Freeze may have struck gold in the portal at wideout for the second straight year. In 2024, KeAndre Lambert-Smith was Auburn’s top target by a wide margin, earning a fifth-round selection by the Chargers in the 2025 NFL Draft. Singleton and Fields now have a chance to become for Jackson Arnold what Lambert-Smith was for Payton Thorne.
But Arnold is the wild card that could upend everything.
His dead-end throw rate at Oklahoma raised red flags. If those issues persist, Freeze, Derrick Nix, and Kent Austin may be forced into a run-heavy scheme—a disappointing turn, considering the investment made at wide receiver.
Given the money Freeze poured into the position, reverting to something resembling Seth Littrell and Joe John Finley’s offense in Norman would be a failure of vision.
Let’s hope Auburn’s most talented group actually gets the chance to show it.
