When Tre Holloman entered the transfer portal, it took Michigan State basketball fans by complete surprise. He had always appeared to be deeply committed to the program, and his vocal support of the senior day tradition made him a fan favorite—someone viewed as nearly untouchable by the Spartan faithful.
That admiration continued into the NCAA Tournament. Even after Holloman delivered one of the worst performances of his career during an Elite Eight loss to Auburn, fans were quick to defend him.
Just two days later, he announced he was transferring.
Initially, many assumed he was chasing a better NIL opportunity, and when he committed to NC State, that theory seemed to hold water. But later reports indicated that Holloman was actually looking for a starting point guard role. His move to NC State made sense in that context—Will Wade was rebuilding the program, and Holloman appeared to be the ideal short-term floor general until Wade brought in his long-term solution in 2026.
For a while, it looked like Holloman had finally secured the lead role he wanted for his final college season—until Friday.
That’s when On3 reported that NC State is now the favorite to land PJ Haggerty, the top remaining point guard in the transfer portal. Haggerty, a standout from Memphis who beat Michigan State during the regular season, is expected to start—his role at NC State would essentially be locked in. That likely pushes Holloman into a shooting guard position or even a bench role.
In the end, it looks like Holloman’s role at NC State could end up being the same—or even less significant—than what he had at Michigan State.
To me, that raises the question: Was Holloman misled about the role he’d have at NC State?
