From College Standout to NFL Long Shot, Cam Skattebo is Out to Prove Himself All Over Again
Once a fan favorite at Arizona State, Cam Skattebo now finds himself in a far different spotlight—as a rookie trying to earn his place with the New York Giants.
Fresh off a stellar collegiate season that saw him finish fifth in Heisman Trophy voting, Skattebo racked up 2,316 yards from scrimmage and scored 24 touchdowns. But none of that guarantees success in the NFL.
“How many snaps of the NFL have you seen me play? Zero, right? I’ve proved nothing,” Skattebo said Friday during rookie minicamp, according to the team transcript. “I’ve shown what I can do in college, but at this level, I have to start over. Whether it takes five years or ten, I’m going to keep proving myself.”
Drafted in the fourth round at No. 105 overall, Skattebo arrives in New York with a chip on his shoulder—and a clear understanding that nothing will be handed to him.
He joins a backfield led by Tyrone Tracy Jr., a fifth-round pick last year who surpassed expectations by overtaking Devin Singletary as the lead back. Tracy finished his rookie season with 839 rushing yards, five touchdowns, and added another 284 yards and a score through the air on 38 catches.
While Singletary remains in the mix as a reliable veteran presence, the potential pairing of Tracy and Skattebo brings intriguing possibilities for the Giants’ offense.
“He’s a really fast running back, and there’s not much to criticize about his game,” Skattebo said of Tracy. “He might have a little more speed than I do, so if people want to call us ‘thunder and lightning,’ that works for me.”
