UNC’s Drake Powell Announces NBA Draft Decision, Will Return to Tar Heels for Upcoming Season
Chapel Hill, N.C. — North Carolina freshman guard Drake Powell has officially made his decision regarding the 2025 NBA Draft, choosing to withdraw his name and return to Chapel Hill for another season with the Tar Heels.
Powell, a former five-star recruit and McDonald’s All-American, was considered a potential late first-round or early second-round pick. However, after evaluating feedback from NBA scouts and consulting with the UNC coaching staff, Powell has opted to continue his development under head coach Hubert Davis.
“I’m grateful for the opportunity to go through the NBA Draft process and get a better understanding of where I stand,” Powell said in a statement released Wednesday. “After talking it over with my family and coaches, I’ve decided it’s best for me to come back to Carolina and continue growing my game. I’m excited for what’s ahead.”
Powell played a key role for the Tar Heels during the 2024-25 season, showcasing his defensive versatility, athleticism, and improving offensive skills. His return provides a significant boost to a UNC roster that’s looking to build on a strong postseason run.
Coach Davis expressed his excitement about Powell’s decision, calling him “a high-character young man with incredible potential.”
“Drake embodies what it means to be a Tar Heel,” Davis said. “His commitment to this program and his teammates speaks volumes. We’re thrilled to have him back.”
With Powell returning, UNC adds experience and talent to its backcourt rotation, setting the stage for another potential championship push in the 2025–26 season.
