Which teams pose the biggest threat to Georgia this season?
The 2025 college football season is just around 100 days away, which means it’s time to ramp up the excitement for what many consider the most thrilling time of the year.
Georgia football is gearing up for a tough road ahead. Not only is the SEC once again expected to be the nation’s strongest conference, but the Bulldogs are also facing what could be the hardest schedule in the country for the second straight year. Add in some uncertainty at key positions—particularly at quarterback—and the challenges become even more apparent.
Despite all that, Georgia’s main objective remains the same: win the National Championship. Of course, that’s easier said than done, especially considering the number of elite contenders across the country.
With that in mind, here are 10 teams with the best shot at stopping Georgia from claiming the national title this season.
1. Texas Longhorns
The Longhorns are arguably the most obvious threat to Georgia in 2025.
Texas is seen as the frontrunner to win the SEC and could very well contend for the National Championship. Unfortunately for Georgia, they’ll have to face this talented squad again during the regular season, in a matchup that could easily hand the Bulldogs a loss.
There’s also a strong chance the two teams could meet again in the SEC Championship. If Georgia were to lose that game, they’d need to win four straight games to secure the College Football Playoff title.
What makes Texas particularly dangerous this year is their motivation. Georgia defeated them twice last season, including a commanding win on the Longhorns’ home turf. Now, Texas will be looking to return the favor with a statement win in Athens later this year.
2. Alabama Crimson Tide
Crimson Tide takes the second spot on this list, and it’s an obvious selection.
Alabama has consistently been a major obstacle for Georgia, remaining the one opponent the Bulldogs struggle to overcome. Although Georgia did manage to defeat Alabama in the National Championship a few years back, that victory stands as their only recent success against the Tide.
Fortunately for Georgia, this season’s matchup is at home, which should improve their chances. Still, it’s a game that will have Georgia fans understandably anxious.
A loss to Alabama could severely damage Georgia’s season hopes early on—especially depending on their performance in the previous game against Tennessee. If Georgia wants to finally break through and beat Alabama again, this is their best opportunity.
3. LSU Tigers
Unlike Texas and Alabama, LSU stands out because Georgia isn’t guaranteed to face them this season. However, among the teams not on Georgia’s regular schedule, LSU poses the biggest threat.
One way LSU could derail Georgia’s national title hopes is by defeating them in the SEC Championship game. While a loss there wouldn’t necessarily eliminate Georgia from playoff contention, it could be disastrous if it’s their third loss of the season.
Additionally, LSU has the potential to prevent Georgia from even reaching the SEC Championship game by claiming that spot themselves. With teams like Alabama, Ole Miss, and South Carolina missing the College Football Playoff last season, Georgia needs every opportunity possible to secure their place.
Even though LSU might not reach all their goals, they still remain a legitimate threat to Georgia’s championship aspirations this year.
4. Florida Gators/Auburn Tigers
Coming in next is a unique pairing—Florida and Auburn—since they’re the only teams on this list without realistic national title hopes. Still, they could play spoiler to Georgia’s championship ambitions.
Georgia’s toughest matchups this season are against Texas, Tennessee, and Alabama, and it’s not unreasonable to expect a loss in one of those games. But if Georgia drops two, their margin for error disappears entirely.
That scenario would make their games against Florida and Auburn even more critical. Both teams are expected to show significant improvement this year and are capable of pulling off an upset, which could be enough to knock Georgia out of College Football Playoff contention.
And with both games being intense rivalries, the unpredictability factor is even higher—anything can happen.
