“A Strong Possibility of Being Cut”: Analyst Warns Anthony Richardson’s Competition with Daniel Jones for Colts QB1 Could Jeopardize His NFL Career

Former NFL scout John Middlekauff predicts that Anthony Richardson’s football career may soon come to an end. Middlekauff believes Richardson’s position with the Indianapolis Colts is already at risk following the arrival of Daniel Jones. Jones recently signed a one-year, \$17.7 million contract with the Colts after spending the previous season with the Minnesota Vikings.

Richardson has been with the Colts since 2023, after being selected as the fourth overall pick in the first round of the NFL Draft. Prior to joining the NFL, he played college football for the Florida Gators. However, Richardson’s performance in the league has been underwhelming, recording 1,814 passing yards, eight touchdowns, and 12 interceptions last season.

On his ‘3\&OUT’ podcast, Middlekauff shared, “Shane Steichen said they’re going to split reps evenly throughout OTAs—about 170 snaps each for Daniel Jones and Anthony Richardson. My first reaction was that Anthony Richardson’s career in Indy has a very good chance of ending because I would bet on Daniel Jones beating him out. I’m not a fan of Daniel Jones either, but I’ve seen this scenario before.”

On the other hand, Daniel Jones threw for 2,070 yards during the 2024 NFL season with the Minnesota Vikings, recording eight touchdowns and seven interceptions. While Jones may not be considered an elite quarterback, his stats clearly surpass those of Anthony Richardson.

Anthony Richardson and Colts to Open Week 1 Against Dolphins

Meanwhile, Anthony Richardson and the Indianapolis Colts are gearing up for their season opener against the Miami Dolphins in Week 1 of the NFL season. Before facing the Dolphins, the Colts will play three preseason games against the Baltimore Ravens, Green Bay Packers, and Cincinnati Bengals.

In the 2024 NFL season, the Colts finished second in the AFC South with an 8-9 record. They closed out the season with a narrow overtime loss to the Jacksonville Jaguars, 26-23. With offseason changes, Richardson and the Colts will be looking to improve their performance and results in the upcoming season.
