In a surprising development for college football on Thursday, Georgia quarterback Carson Beck has chosen to enter the transfer portal rather than pursue the NFL Draft.
Beck stated his plan to enter the draft on Dec. 28, but has since reversed that choice and joined the portal. The decision follows closely behind Georgia’s elimination from the College Football Playoff by Notre Dame just a week earlier.
Beck got hurt on the final play of the first half during the SEC Championship match versus Texas. He endured a torn UCL in his right elbow and had to sit out the CFP.
The senior in his fifth year has dedicated all five seasons of his career to Georgia, serving as the backup to Stetson Bennett on consecutive national championship squads.
Beck has passed for 7,912 yards and 58 touchdowns while also rushing for 245 yards and five touchdowns throughout his college career.
At various moments throughout the season, Beck appeared to be among the top quarterbacks in the nation, highlighted by an impressive performance against Tennessee.
Many believed that the choice to enter the NFL Draft was a mistake, and judging by Beck’s abrupt reversal, he must have realized he wouldn’t be a top selection.
According to ESPN’s Pete Thamel, Miami is the leading contender to acquire Beck. Since Riley Leonard is leaving Notre Dame after this season, the Irish are yet another team in need of a quarterback.
Texas Tech and Ohio State are additional programs to monitor in the Beck recruitment race.
Ohio State will require a quarterback once Will Howard (likely) enters the draft. Texas Tech is an under-the-radar team benefiting from alum Patrick Mahomes, which might have swayed Beck’s choice.
Ultimately, the choice hinges on Beck’s assessment of what benefits his career most and which school and coaching staff will aid his preparation for the 2026 NFL Draft.
