Indiana University basketball coach Darian DeVries announced the program’s support staff for the 2025-26 season on Thursday. The following is the updated release from IU Athletics:
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – Indiana head men’s basketball coach Darian DeVries unveiled his support staff for the upcoming 2025-26 season, introducing eight key members to the program.
**Mike Bargen | Special Assistant to the Head Coach**
Lincoln, Neb., native Mike Bargen joins IU after a decade as associate head coach at Bradley University under Brian Wardle. During his tenure, Bradley won 196 games, secured one Missouri Valley Conference (MVC) regular-season title, two MVC Tournament championships, and made four postseason appearances, including the 2019 NCAA Tournament Round of 64. Bargen helped recruit six All-MVC selections and seven All-Freshman honorees. Previously, he coached Butler Community College for eight years, earning two Jayhawk Conference Coach of the Year awards and leading the Grizzlies to a 164-93 record. His 2014-15 team set program records with 28 regular-season wins and a 22-game win streak. Bargen also served as a graduate manager at Creighton (2001-04) under Dana Altman, alongside DeVries, contributing to a 72-23 record and two NCAA Tournament appearances. A Marquette graduate, Bargen played as a two-year starter and team captain, later earning an MBA from Creighton. He and his wife, Kacy, have four children: John, Olivia, Maddox, and Blake.
**Ryan Horn | Head Strength and Conditioning Coach**
Ryan Horn, from Inwood, W.Va., spent the 2024-25 season with West Virginia under DeVries, improving the Mountaineers’ record by 10 wins to 19-13, with six Quad 1 victories. Previously, Horn was Assistant Athletic Director of Sports Performance at Drake, working directly with DeVries and helping the Bulldogs win the MVC and reach the NCAA Tournament. Horn also served at Wichita State, Tulsa, Wake Forest, and VCU, contributing to NCAA Tournament appearances and training NBA talents like John Collins. A former college football player, Horn holds a bachelor’s in exercise science from Shepherd (2007) and a master’s in sport administration from VCU (2008). He is a certified Master Strength and Conditioning Coach (MSCC). Horn and his wife, Ashley, have two children, Landon and Addison.
**Andrew Vereen | Athletic Trainer**
Sioux City, Iowa, native Andrew Vereen joins IU after five years at Drake, where he managed healthcare for men’s basketball, contributing to three consecutive MVC championships and NCAA Tournament appearances. Vereen also worked four years with Kansas football and holds certifications in corrective exercise, blood flow restriction, and dry needling. He earned a bachelor’s in athletic training (2014) and a master’s in athletic training (2016) from Northern Iowa, plus an MBA from Kansas.
**Justin Bailey | Director of Player Personnel**
Fort Smith, Ark., native Justin Bailey comes from Sam Houston State, where he served as associate head coach in 2024-25. He mentored All-CUSA guard Lamar Wilkerson and helped the Bearkats win the 2023-24 CUSA regular-season title. Bailey’s defensive strategies led SHSU to top-five CUSA rankings in multiple categories. Previously, he coached at Pittsburg State, Arkansas Fort Smith, and Lamar, contributing to multiple postseason appearances. A former NJCAA national champion at Arkansas Fort Smith, Bailey holds a bachelor’s in kinesiology from UT Permian Basin (2010) and a master’s from Arizona State (2012).
**Garrett Sturtz | Director of Operations**
Newton, Iowa, native Garrett Sturtz served as West Virginia’s Director of Basketball Operations in 2024-25 under DeVries. A Drake alum, Sturtz holds program records for games played (167), wins (120), and rebounds (917). He was a graduate assistant at Drake in 2023-24 and earned a bachelor’s in business administration (2022), currently pursuing an MBA.
**Jalen Cannady | Video and Player Development Analyst**
Concord, N.C., native Jalen Cannady was West Virginia’s video coordinator in 2024-25, aiding a 10-win improvement. He previously served as a player development coach for the Birmingham Squadron (NBA G-League) and as a graduate assistant at Charlotte, contributing to a 2023 CBI title. Cannady holds a bachelor’s in business administration from North Carolina Wesleyan (2016).
**Jackson Creel | Graduate Manager**
Jackson Creel, a two-year walk-on at IU (2023-24), earned Academic All-Big Ten honors and was a two-time NABC Honors Court recipient. He transferred from Rend Lake Junior College, where he was a two-time All-Great Rivers Athletic Conference selection. A Mount Vernon, Ill., native, Creel was a prep standout, earning All-South 7 Conference and All-State honors.
**ShanQuan Hemphill | Graduate Manager**
Michigan City, Ind., native ShanQuan Hemphill played for DeVries at Drake (2020-22), earning All-MVC honors and helping the Bulldogs to a 77.4% win rate. He also played at Green Bay and Florida Southwestern State, later competing professionally in Luxembourg, Croatia, and Sweden. Hemphill was a high school basketball and track standout, earning a silver medal in high jump at the IHSAA state finals.
