Legendary high school coach Kevin Boyle has recently mentored several future Duke basketball players, including former five-star prospects and top-three NBA Draft picks RJ Barrett and Cooper Flagg.

That track record could certainly boost Duke’s chances of landing future talent from Boyle, who is set to take over at SPIRE Academy (Ohio) next season after capturing eight national titles at Montverde Academy (Fla.).
One such prospect is five-star combo guard King Gibson. After playing his freshman season at The Burlington School (N.C.) and his sophomore year under Boyle at Montverde, Gibson announced this week that he’s transferring to SPIRE for his junior campaign. As a known Duke basketball fan, his ties to Boyle and admiration for the Blue Devils may work in Duke’s favor down the line.
“I want to get the Duke offer,” King Gibson told Pro Insight last year. “I want to go to Duke. That’s my dream school…I’ve always been a Duke fan since I was growing up. I’ve always been around a Duke culture with my family.”
Gibson, a 6-foot-4, 185-pound phenom, continues to draw national attention as his offer list grows. Among the latest programs to extend offers are a pair of Duke’s in-state ACC rivals: NC State and North Carolina.
Currently ranked No. 14 overall in the 247Sports Composite for the 2027 class, King Gibson has been on Duke’s radar for several months, with reported interest from head coach Jon Scheyer and his staff. However, despite the mutual intrigue, the explosive North Carolina native has yet to receive an official offer from the Blue Devils.
